(as of 30 September 2024) ** Sindh People’s Housing for Flood Affectees (SPHF) ------------------------------------------------------------ Funding Status: Sindh People’s Housing for Flood Affectees (SPHF) initiative represents the world’s largest housing rehabilitation project of its kind. This financial support includes a significant US$500 million contribution from the World Bank and a $227 million contribution from the Government of Sindh. Total damage and re-validation: According to the Government of Sindh (GoS), the floods in 2022 submerged 70% of the province. The tragedy has hit and destroyed24 of the 30 districts. 12.36 million people have been affected, and 2.1million homes have been destroyed. 85% of the damaged houses are kacha houses. 2.036 million beneficiaries’ data have been verified through a transparent MIS app-based system. (as of 30 September 2024) Disbursement status: More than 850,000 bank accounts have been openedand 604,857 first tranche; 418,105second tranche; 320,118 third tranche and 176,726 fourth tranche have been received by beneficiaries for housing reconstruction. (https://www.sphf.gos.pk/beneficiary-status/) Delegation from European Union gets Insights of Settlement Improvement Initiatives On September 2, 2024, The World Bank Pakistan (https://www.facebook.com/WorldBankPakistan?__cft__%5b0%5d=AZXV6ACzbfhVljG6h0...) facilitated a meeting between the European Union Delegation in Pakistan (https://www.facebook.com/EUinPakistan?__cft__%5b0%5d=AZXV6ACzbfhVljG6h0R8W6U...) and the European Investment Bank (https://www.facebook.com/EuropeanInvestmentBank?__cft__%5b0%5d=AZXV6ACzbfhVl...) at the SPHF office. The purpose of the meeting was to brief the delegation on the monumental task being undertaken by SPHF in constructing 2.1million houses for those impacted by the floods of 2022 and to explore opportunities for collaboration in the housing and allied facilities that SPHF is working on, including WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) and settlement improvement initiatives. The lead trainer, Mr. Munib Ali Faridi, an Environment Specialist, guided participants in understanding climate resilience, enhancing their policy knowledge, and exploring adaptation and mitigation strategies, as well as fostering collaborative solutions. PHED has established water and sanitation standards for all WASH stakeholders. For more details, Qurban Ali Shah, qurban.ali@shrrp.org (mailto:qurban.ali@shrrp.org) Brick Price Index – Sindh (July- September 2024) The Resilient Housing Working Group (RHWG), in collaboration with various partner organizations, conducted a detailed survey of brick prices across 15 districts in Sindh from July to Sept 2024. The survey aimed to track fluctuations in brick prices over period by gathering data from 55 brick kilns. Data collected from multiple brick kilns highlights a mixed trend in brick prices. Hyderabad recorded the highest average price at PKR 12.4 per brick, followed closely by Badin at PKR 12.3 and Jamshoro at PKR 12.2. On the other hand, Mirpurkhas reported the lowest average price at PKR 8.3 per brick, with Umerkot slightly higher at PKR 8.6. Districts such as Matiari, Sujawal, and Thatta saw average prices of PKR11.9, PKR 11.8, and PKR 11.8 respectively, indicating a sustained upward trend compared to previous quarters. Prices in other districts like Tharparkar (PKR9.5) and Noshehro Feroz (PKR 9.9) remained relatively moderate. This data reflects continued market fluctuations, emphasizing the need for close monitoring of brick prices to guide resilient housing initiatives effectively. She has been the sole provider for her three children while facing financial struggles, which worsened after a major flood in 2022 damaged their home. With no means to rebuild, Laddo found it increasingly difficult to care for her family. Muslim Aid intervened during this crisis, offering vital support, including shelter, which enabled Laddo to rebuild her home. This assistance significantly improved their living situation, bringing stability and reducing daily stress. While Laddo's life has improved, her story underscores the critical role of humanitarian organizations like Muslim Aid in providing both immediate relief and ongoing support for families to regain long-term stability.
