With four creeks nearby, heavy rains and strong winds pose regular challenges to the community. In 2022 alone, approximately 3,000 households suffered damage or destruction due to these environmental factors. The bricks and concrete structures have shown limited effectiveness in the area, leading most households to rely on timber and ply board for housing. However, techniques used lack adequate resilience against multiple hazards, highlighting the need for more robust construction techniques. There is a strong need to develop cost-effective, multi-hazard resilient housing and settlement options tailored to the specific needs of the area. SHRRP and SPHF are fully supportive and ready to facilitate initiatives across a spectrum, from small-scale endeavors such as developing and testing technical solutions to larger-scale projects like constructing 3,000 resilient homes. If you're interested in supporting initiatives in Keti Bandar, please reach out to adeel.javaid@shrrp.org (mailto:adeel.javaid@shrrp.org) Information Management 24 partner organizations have reported their work on housing reconstruction as of 29 Feb 2024. They are actively involved in tasks such as cash management, material sorting, construction oversight, and safety assurance. Recognizing their significant contribution in the reconstruction process, Catholic Relief Services organized a one-day pilot training for women construction supervisors, aiming to empower them in construction leadership, promote gender equality, and strengthen resilience through multi-hazard reconstruction techniques. 18 women from all 9 villages of Deh Kamangar, UC Qazi Arif District Dadu, participated in this training. Additionally, these women received orientation on hygiene promotion, kitchen gardening, tree plantation, and other livelihood activities. To ensure the efficient management of both reconstruction efforts and other social services, these trained women will be engaged as "Community Volunteers" for a three-month duration, receiving a modest stipend for their facilitation. This training initiative intends to expand to other flood-affected areas with ongoing reconstruction activities. Training materials will be shared with relevant platforms for wider adoption. Post-flood 2022, Muhammad was partially displaced for two months, living in tents. Struggling with health issues like arthritis and fever, Muhammad Nawaz's earnings were stretched thin to support his family and to educate his kids. The construction of their new home faced a setback due to a lack of bricks, hampering progress. CRS intervened, working alongside the Village Reconstruction Committee (VRC) to overcome this hurdle. Together, they mobilized the community, generating a remarkable display of solidarity, with over 3,000 bricks and 8,000 PKR donated swiftly by other households. This collective effort restores Muhammad Nawaz's hope, enabling him to resume building his safe haven. Muhammad Nawaz's family finds solace in their new home, a testament to resilience and community support, reflecting on their journey from hardship to stability. Muhammad Nawaz, a story of resilience, provides more motivation to organizations like CRS and SPHF in building resilient homes and sustainable communities in Sindh, Pakistan. Hurmat Bibi is a resident of Jhuddo Tehsil. In 2022, her house collapsed due to floods, leaving her with no place to live. The floods caused extreme poverty and devastation, making it impossible for her to rebuild. She found herself in a difficult situation, especially considering she has young daughters. Unfortunately, she has no arrangements for their safety and privacy. Living in a tent, she did not feel secure. After having a proper house, she can ensure the safety of her children. In the situation of heavy rains and floods, she can protect herself and her children from difficulties. She can arrange for privacy and take care of the upbringing of her daughters. "Grateful to Allah for my new home. Thanks to Helping Hand for Relief and Development, PALS, and all supporters. It brings profound peace and joy." ** EVENTS & RESOURCES ------------------------------------------------------------ NEW CALL FOR PROPOSALS ** Apply under the 7th Cohort by 21 April 2024 ------------------------------------------------------------ ** The Global EbA Fund (https://globalebafund.org/fundupdates/) announces its 7th application cycle with the cut-off date on 21 April 2024. Women's housing, land, and property (HLP) rights are crucial for their security and inclusion. Cultural norms and discrimination often hinder these rights, exacerbated by conflict and displacement. Shelter programs must offer suitable housing, address legal barriers, prevent eviction, and employ inclusive, collaborative approaches. Advocacy should target gender-responsive laws, joint marital property rights, and alignment with international human rights standards.
