| Total damage and re-validation: According to the Government of Sindh (GoS), the floods in 2022 submerged 70% of the province. The tragedy has hit and destroyed 24 of the 30 districts. 12.36 million people have been affected, and 2.1 million homes have been destroyed. 85% of the damaged houses are kacha houses. 2.036 million beneficiaries’ data have been verified through a transparent MIS app-based system. (as of 31 January 2025) Disbursement status: More than 900,000 bank accounts have been opened and 809,326 first tranche; 564,294 second tranche; 419,466 third tranche and 279,943 fourth tranche have been received by beneficiaries for housing reconstruction. | | Head, FCDO Pakistan visited SPHF in January 2025 On 27 January 2025, a delegation from the British Deputy High Commission, led by Richard Lindsay, Head, of Pakistan at the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office, visited SPHF. During the visit, SPHF CEO Khalid Mehmood Shaikh shared the remarkable progress of SPHF and highlighted its expanded focus beyond housing to include WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) and settlement improvements across Sindh. The session focused on; reviewing progress on the 5W matrix and WASH mapping dashboard, sharing innovative Social Behavior Change (SBC) strategies and models, highlighting sustainable, climate-resilient WASH interventions and groundwater recharge initiatives, planning the documentation of WASH success stories and lessons learned. | | | Empowering Masons for Flood-Resilient Housing in Sindh by CRS and SPHF As part of the post-flood 2022 recovery process, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Pakistan in collaboration with Sindh People’s Housing for Flood Affectees (SPHF) and its implementing partners conducted skilled mason training in flood affected areas of Sindh. A total 3125 masons will be trained for two days on essential construction techniques and minimum construction standards for disaster risk reduction in flood-resilient housing following on the SPHF and SHRRP Mason Training Curriculum. So far, total 1304 masons have been trained in the districts Dadu, Naushahroferoz, and Mirpurkhas in collaboration with the SPHF’s partners TRDP, SAFCO Support Foundation and NRSP. | | | | | | | | | Building Resilience: Climate-Adaptive Housing for Coastal Sindh by CRS & SPHF To address the challenges posed by floods, high wind velocity, and extreme climatic conditions in the coastal areas of Sindh, Pakistan, SPHF plans to construct approximately 350 resilient houses in Keti Bandar and the surrounding creeks. Conventional house typologies struggle to withstand the harsh coastal environment, where strong winds, saline air, and frequent flooding compromise structural integrity. To overcome these challenges, CRS provided financial and technical support to complete a pilot housing is in Keti Bandar, integrating the best local practices of timber structures with structural modifications to enhance bracing, flood resilience, and reinforced connections between floor and roof joints. Given the remote location and difficult terrain, transporting construction materials presents a significant challenge, requiring innovative logistical solutions for timely and efficient execution. The technical implementation is being supported by CRS along with financial support with technical guidance from SHRRP while structural analysis for the proposed design has been carried out by NED UET and HANDS Pakistan playing a key role in community mobilization and engagement. This initiative aims to develop climate-adaptive housing solutions that can endure the region’s extreme environmental conditions, ensuring long-term safety and sustainability for vulnerable coastal communities. | | | Financial Assistance for Flood-Affected Communities in Dadu by FRDP
The monsoon 2024 affected villages in District Dadu of Sindh, leaving communities submerged for months due to breaches in Bunds (embankments) and heavy rainfall. Vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities, pregnant and lactating women, and women-headed households, faced social and economic challenges. In response, FRDP and WHH, under the BRAND project, provided one-time cash grants of PKR 45,000 to 1,060 affected households through a Crisis Modifier activity, enabling them to take anticipatory actions against future disasters. One of the right holders, Humera, 35 years old, a mother of two disabled children living in a tent, used the grant to stock food and invested in handicraft. She was able to purchase raw material of Sindhi Cap from the grant, and could save up to 50% margin while buying from the wholesale market. Humera now increased sales from 11,000 to 21,000 pkr. |

| | | | A Settlement Planning Guideline Book These guidelines have been structured to reflect the sequence of events when responding to a situation that requires settlement planning of existing or new areas. Since these guidelines have been developed based on experience gained through a pilot project titled climate resilient settlement planning in Deh Kamangar, Taluka Mehar, District Dadu, Sindh, there are considerations that may not be applicable across the board. However, it is hoped that these guidelines will provide answers where possible and identify questions that need to be considered when undertaking a settlement planning project/programme in its entirety. Advocacy should target gender-responsive laws, joint marital property rights, and alignment with international human rights standards.
