| Total damage and re-validation: According to the Government of Sindh (GoS), the floods in 2022 submerged 70% of the province. The tragedy has hit and destroyed 24 of the 30 districts. 12.36 million people have been affected, and 2.1 million homes have been destroyed. 85% of the damaged houses are kacha houses. 2.036 million beneficiaries’ data have been verified through a transparent MIS app-based system. Disbursement Status: More than 850,000 bank accounts have been opened and 806,769 first tranche; 492,237 second tranche; 392,587 third tranche and 253,037 fourth tranche have been received by beneficiaries for housing reconstruction. (as of 31 December 2024)

| | | Training of IP Engineers on Development of Project Design Document for Pilot WASH villages by SPHF Moving beyond housing, SPHF is expanding its reach by initiating WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) and allied infrastructure in 3,000 villages, aiming to benefit 264,250 households. As part of this initiative, SPHF hosted a two-day training session on December 14-15, 2024, for IP engineers. The training focused on pre-feasibility assessments and the development of Project Design Documents (PDD) for the pilot WASH villages. Participants include engineers, district managers, and other key stakeholders from Districts Jacobabad, Kamber Shahdadkot, Larkana, Khairpur, Shikarpur, Sukkur, Ghotki, and Kashmore. | SHRRP Participation at the 29th EAROPH World Congress 2024 The SHRRP National Coordinator, Mr. Minar Thapa Magar, attended the 29th EAROPH World Congress held in Islamabad, Pakistan, where he presented on Post-Disaster Management and Mitigation in the Asian Region. His presentation emphasized the collaborative housing and settlement recovery efforts led by SPHF in Sindh, Pakistan, in partnership with various development partners and recovery stakeholders. The session facilitated insightful discussions with esteemed panelists, including Ghazala Naeem, Noor Elahi, and Yasmeen Lari. The congress served as a valuable platform for engaging with students, architects, planners, practitioners from the Asia-Pacific region, and entrepreneurs interested in disaster recovery. The exchange of ideas and experiences provided new perspectives on culture, climate change, urban planning, and post-disaster resilience, which can be integrated into ongoing flood recovery initiatives in Sindh. | | | Exchanged Knowledge of Resettlement Projects within Partners in Sindh In December 2024, a joint visit was conducted by the Sindh Housing Recovery and Reconstruction Platform (SHRRP) and its partners UN-IOM and UN-HABITAT to South Sindh, encompassing Districts Thatta, Jamshoro, Sujawal, Badin, Mirpurkhas, and Sanghar. The visit, conducted in collaboration with recovery partners including HANDS, Islamic Relief Pakistan, Hamdam Foundation, AMRDO, Penny Appeal, Muslim Aid, IOM, and the Shahid Afridi Foundation, focused on assessing various recovery initiatives. Key highlights included evaluations of diverse housing typologies, village settlements, and village-level infrastructure. The delegation reviewed completed and ongoing construction of latrines, installation of hand pumps, and the establishment of community facilities such as halls and pathways. These efforts collectively aim to enhance the resilience and quality of life for flood-affected communities in the region, showcasing the collaborative efforts of all stakeholders involved in post-disaster recovery. | | | | | | | | | | Multi-Purpose Complex in Flood-Affected Khairpur, Sindh by Qatar Charity In a major initiative to support flood-affected communities, Qatar Charity has partnered with the District Government of Khairpur, Sindh, to establish a state-of-the-art multi-purpose complex in the village of Simang, UC Gujo, Taluka Khairpur Mir’s. The District Government has allocated 4 acres of land for the project and issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC). Fully funded by Qatar Charity, the project is expected to be completed within 12 months. The complex will feature 60 permanent houses with reinforced cement concrete (RCC) structures, each designed with two bedrooms, a kitchen, a veranda, and an attached washroom. | | | Building Resilient Housing in Sindh by Islamic Relief Pakistan Muhammad Khan's house was destroyed during the heavy rains of 2022, leaving his family anxious about reconstruction. In an attempt to provide shelter for their children, they gathered wood and sticks to build a temporary structure.
"A mud house is no more than a mound of dust that collapses with every heavy rainfall, we used to build every year, and rain destroys it. Having a permanent shelter is a blessing for our family," shared Muhammad Khan while visiting his new home.
Nearly 3,252 permanent shelters, including one for Muhammad Khan's family, have been constructed in Sindh by Islamic Relief Pakistan to provide safe and resilient housing that can withstand heavy rains and floods. For more updates please contact, Mehboob Ali, Mehboob.Ali@irp.org.pk |

Cultural norms and discrimination often hinder these rights, exacerbated by conflict and displacement. Shelter programs must offer suitable housing, address legal barriers, prevent eviction, and employ inclusive, collaborative approaches. Advocacy should target gender-responsive laws, joint marital property rights, and alignment with international human rights standards.
